I had read great things about this Onkyo HTS in CR magazine again and again whenever they reviewed home theater equipment so when my dad wanted a system I ordered this for him without a second thought.Do yourself a favor, buy this HT-S5100 and spend the grand you saved on a bigger flat panel. This system ROCKS. CANT BEAT THIS DEAL.
The product came in a damaged box (probably the fault of the ups guys) but the company gave me a substantial discount due to this. They also gave me the option of receiving another new product but I chose the discount. I am very pleased with the product and the company.
We are not audiophiles and bought this system because Consumer Reports rated it as tops by a wide margin in it's group. It was shipped UPS by a sub contractor and the carton and styrofoam packing were badly damaged although the components were all OK. Instructions were clear and concise. It plays wonderfully and we are very pleased with the performance. The mfr says they will not accept any warranty returns unless in original packaging, so I may have a problem. I've read in customer comments that the receiver tends to run hot, but with a DVD player on top it just gets wam and not uncomfortable to the touch.
As many have written, the size of the speakers is a bit much, but otherwise I could not be happier with the system. The sound is great and Blu-ray movies rock the entire house. After conducting much research into home theatres in a box, I went with this one. I have a Sony CD/DVD, Sony PS3, Sky-Fi2 (XM), and HD cable box running through it. If I was not already married, I'd take this system out behind the bleachers and get it pregnant. The set up was reasonably painless although took some cognition to figure out how to configure all of the components. I found HDMI cables wickedly cheap online -- like under $10 -- and have it on good authority that it is not worth spending billions on them.
The whole set is now orchestratd by my Logitec Harmony One remote, which I highly recommend. I could have gone for a more expensive set up, but I was already buying a new 52" HDTV and some very un-manly off white buffet-like stand to house the setup at my bride's insistence. As always, Amazon had the best price online. I substituted the color coded Onkyo wires for some beefier ones at Radio Shack and used a DLO dock for the ipod (instead of the included one). I also added a speaker switch box so I can run an extra set of "B" speakers. I convinced some family members to chip in and we collectively purchased another one as a gift for my brother. What else can I say, buy it and get the Harmony One too.
I am very happy with my purchase of this system. For the money it is excellent quality and the sound is great. It was very easy to install and have up working in no time. I would recomend it to anyone who was interested in a resonably priced system with a great sound.
